I recently found a quote by Miguel De Unamuno “Be yourself, But not in the selfish sense - in the spiritual one. You are not a finished product. You are becoming.”
This hit me quite hard, especially when coming off the back of a 10-day rest away in the Dominican Republic. I always thought I was working towards being a finished product; however, the idea of simply living as becoming rather than ever being a finished article is quite simply freeing.
The trip was pretty perfect and allowed me to focus solely on being happy and worrying only about when to go for food and whether the pool was too busy.
I was able to shoot film for 10 days in a country I have never been to, and even better, I had a resort where I could walk around with no worries and really find the best shots due to being there for 10 days in different lighting situations.
I listened to audiobooks I wrote pretty much every day and swam twice a day almost religiously. The sun was great for both my skin and my mental health; however, 38 degrees is a tad warm for me, so many trips back into air-conditioned rooms were needed. Also needed a respite from being eaten alive by the mosquitoes, which seemed to target my legs only.
By the end, I realised that when I can only worry about shooting on my favourite mediums, I feel happiest and may well be creating images I am actually happy with. On this, I am becoming, not yet a finished article.
